Friday morning acoustic duo playing for the Honolulu Country Club Brunch from 1130am - 1:30pm. It's all for golf and lunch of course. Lau lau, beef stew, chicken long rice, kalua pig, steamed fish, ogo... Ono! Left there to visit a few hours with Retired Command Sergeant Major Dad. Then, a short drive to the clubhouse at the Olomana Golf Course. More Hawaiian music from 4pm.- 6pm as Greg and I revisited our favorite hapa - haole tunes and arrangements we used to play over many years. Yep, we had a blast and remembered quite a few arrangements as we segued from song to song. Even tunes from the LOCAL FOLK cd... Sing Hawaiian Sing, Standing in da Ua, Aina.... We did it again Saturday after another much longer visit with Dad. Louise danced the hula KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE HANDS. Then Rick Rickard sat in singing on guitar. Greg opted to jump out to go talk story with friends and handed me his picks and bar. He said, " go ahead and bend the picks any way you like to fit your fingers" . After wailing out a strain of tropic exotica, I must say... I did a pretty good job bending those metal finger picks!
The Hawaiian Steel Guitar convention is in town. All our mainland ohana. Check it out at hsga.orgAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2371310489813695484.post-83342521820046216782013-04-24T04:41:00.001-07:002013-04-25T12:00:02.947-07:00Birthday Blues My birthday was Monday, April 22nd... Same day as Grandma Cornelio ( my mom's mom ) , Gabby Pahinui, Peter Frampton and a million other cool people. Same exact day in 1956 , as Joy Reese, who was born the same day as me in Tripler Army Hospital (the big pink hospital on the hill ) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Didn't actually meet her until we met again in High School many years later in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Maybe I 'll attempt to find her on Facebook. April 22nd is my birthday and EARTH DAY ! It was a mellow day with a couple sushi and later a gig with big bro Art at Turtle Bay on the North Shore. Stopped by ADOBO, our friend Leo ' s restaurant in Wahiawa for some pork guisantes and chicken adobo on the way home. Filipino food can broke da mouth...so Ono! I recommend the Adobo Restaurant....mmmmm good!
Saw all my birthday wishes from friends on Facebook and attempted to LIKE them all. LOL mahalo nui, thank you , salamat po, arigato gozaimasu to everyone. Mahalo for supporting my music too.
Anyway, all this year I thought I was already 57 and turning 58.... Must have been how I was feeling... smiLe. Actually, I was a 1956 Chevy, turquoise and white, like the one my dad had in Okinawa when we were kids at Sukiran Elementary School. I must have been a smart kid, doing 6th grade math in third grade. Well my adult math skills didn't figure my own age right, duh... And I am a 1957 Chevy with full blown pointy tail fins now. They ( the Beatles ) say its yer birthday...it's my birthday too yea, ...it's official. I'm 57 years young. Time to get my health, Telecasters and pedal board together... Shake dem Earth Day Blues ...write some groovin' songs too. Let there be inspiration!
LOLSaturday was a total blast jammin' with PILIKIA for the Home Depot customer appreciation event... Big savings! The music was awesome with Mark Yim at the helm, Alden Levi on bass, Casey Olsen on Hawaiian steel guitar, Dwight Kanae on guitar and Gordon Freitas playing his Pono ukulele. Remember, Mark and Dwight used to play in the Peter Moon Band. In fact all these guys have performed all around the globe and played with EVERYBODY! Traditional Hawaiian to the hits from Kalapana to Peter Moon Band hits of course... The trio version of PILIKIA (trouble) plays at the Charthouse in Waikiki every Friday from 6pm - 9. And again after swapping out a musician or two, from 9:30 to midnight - thirty. Ono food! Between 7:30 and 8pm you can see and hear the boom of fireworks across the parking lot. Not sure when I'm on... The crew gets rotated and I usually get called in when someone can't make it. Calamari, garlic chicken, spinach salad, pork chop...Way cool! I'm in.
I figured, why not just start anew RIGHT HERE! Good idea!
A lot has transpired in the art of real life since my noggin last did any bloggin'. Two laptops and a desk top computer along with an iPad and a few phones smarter than me have passed on to the scrap heap in the sky along with hundreds of songs and snippets of potentially brilliant writings...haha aka aka! Lost in cyber space. This new iPad 2 came along just in time to log an awakening in my creative process... I woke up and the writer's block was gone. I feel like writing songs and ideas are flowing. Unfortunately, if I don' write it down it fades away forever. Gotta take my own advice and write down everything that comes to mind. As I recall, that is how my first 40 songs came to be... Quickly, one after the other. Even snippets written at different times came together to be one good song. Way cool! Write it down, carry tape recorder, use the voice recorder on your phone or CALL YOUR ANSWERING MACHINE! Brilliant idea... Keep it and turn it into something wonderful. K den, I'm on a new journey...writing and someday even painting again. New music coming and a couple books I need to get back to writing. Two week cruise across the Pacific coming up. This new iPad is gonna get a lot of action! So, revisit the music at my website and I will point the way to new stuff I have posted since the last posts from a long, long time ago in a blog far, far away.... Enjoy life every minute.. ALOHA...don't leave home without it!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2371310489813695484.post-8726282196422992382013-04-18T06:24:00.002-07:002013-04-18T06:27:19.863-07:00NEW BLOGGIN' NOGGINGonna keep the old blog cuz it's a wonderful archive full of aloha and great information gathered along the way. Lotsa cool stuff to reflect on here... However, I will begin a NEW BLOG focusing on logging my thoughts mostly on the creative process, music, art, songwriting... An ocean of pondering will probably be what happens... Or maybe simply, what's happenin'... I will try to stay up on keeping this current...like an event. Share the music at http://gordonfreitas.com. The Pride of Hawai'i was a brand new ship that barely made it a year in the islands before charting a new course to NCL's international fleet as the Jade. As part of the memory, here's a partial glimpse of the mechanics of our Hawaiian Duo -J-O-B. We introduce our guests to Hawaiian free style local jammin' and include lotsa their favorite songs that reconnect them with the good ol' days of their youth... from Don Ho, IZ and Blue Hawaiian Elvis to Bob Marley, and the Beach Boys. We made so many friends on that ship. Usually, the pool deck would be packed... folks gettin' their deep Hawaiian vacation tan while sippin' a boat drink or passing around some Coronas or Coors iced in plastic football helmets. Toward the end of our afternoon shift, a little rain chased off the over-baked sunbathers while the rest were off to dinner reservations and the show in the theatre. For a few months I was doubling as the rock guitarist in the Soul Rockin' Nites show, the wedding band guitar player for Tony & Tina's Wedding production and the solo guitarist in the lounge... not to be confused with the masterful performances of my good friend Butch O'Sullivan in the atrium and restaurant. Anyway, it was time to wind down the show and roll up the hose... when Eddie Pascua decided to whip out his little Nikon and video some of my old school guitar antics. In this video clip I fumbled through some classic chops I forgot a long time ago.. Ha ha aka aka, you can hear us laughing. We had too much fun... not only THAT day, but EVERYDAY! Aside from our goofiness in these moments, couples stopped to dance while the sheltered folks on the upper decks were quite entertained as always. I ended up with an Ibanez guitar after going thru my Godin Multiac Jazz, and a favorite Antigua Fender Telecaster, but here, my first new Schecter guitar + Digitech RP-200 pedal rig proved to have pretty good tone thanks to Eddie tweekin' the pedal to my personal preferences. From this day on the jams only get better as we keep Reeling in the Years! As we acknowledge our new friends who figure we enjoy what we do for a living... with aloha and a smiLe... I hope to be a rock star like Eddie Pascua when I grow up... That buggah is my guitar hero & tech guru. Aloha to that big ship!!
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2371310489813695484.post-87842121440769888752008-06-16T00:00:00.000-07:002009-04-09T05:35:50.125-07:00Where's Gordo? Humanity has long suffered from a condition called "waiting". Believing its all gonna get better sooner or later... expectations that exhaust and frustrate us and waste our time.
Life is too short for that.
A long drive fills my head with lots of wide open spaces and imagery for songs yet to be written... at the same time I find company in audiobooks as I listened to the familiar wisdom of Eckhart Tolle (enjoy this link to some of it) http://peacefulrivers.homestead.com/EckhartTolle.html . With each mile I proceeded to empty my own head of clogged up irrelevant thoughts and started getting back in touch with my own inner stillness. There's something about driving that gets me closer to that place beyond the captivating beauty of external forms with names... that place where a state of connectedness with something immeasurable, indestuctible and greater than me exists... where I am totally here and present... where my true nature and inner essence of all things around me is revealed beyond the need for labels and prescribed form. Enlightenment for me is just being... being right here, right now... in a simple state of one-ness... simply aware of myself without all the mental noise... denying my ego of it's collected accomplishments that comprise its mind-based identity and ultimate control over me, me. me, me , me... "Eh, you somebody?" ha ha aka aka! K-den, I better stop thinkin' and let the smoke clear. Nice road, big hills, big trees and not too much traffic. This Cadillac I'm driving is a good, smooth ride. The weather is still cool and a leather or denim jacket was more than enough. Ate salads, crab & fresh fish to mexican food and fried chicken but took a break from my favorite Best Foods mayonaise. Its very refreshing and funny that I was on this journey before and might have always been clawing my way back. Maybe I never left it and have been hanging on to most of it all this time. I was already immersed in that type of discipline in the early seventies through martial arts and progressive youthful curiousity. Looks like I've kick-started it again in California... deja vu... San Francisco, Highway 101, mount Shasta, the Pacific Highway, the redwood forest... where this land was made for you and me. The country side looks just like the way Mr. Guthrie described it in a folk song... pretty much how I left it over 30 years ago~ "we have all been here before, we have all been here before..." I'm on the road in California visiting family and friends. Chillin' out on the land in a cool set of wheels... I'm off the cruise ships for a much needed breath of fresh air. Northern California to the Oregon coastline is a great place to take that breath. Sporadic jamming, recording, and the search for the Holy Grail guitar. Found a Martin CEO-5 in Napa Valley at ALL STAR GUITARS (2522 Jefferson St., Napa, CA. 94558). Mahalo to Dan "da man" Howard". What a cool shop! Called Uncle Mike and he checked it out on the internet... told me the price was gonna save me big bucks. It's a special edition 12-fret dreadnought, solid bearclaw spruce top, herringbone top trim, tortoise pick guard, old style small abalone dot inlays, old style logo, gloss body, satin finish neck, signed by Martin CEO, C.F. Martin IV... look it up at http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/CEO5.htm
Way cool!!! Maybe, just maybe... this axe might be THE ONE. Let's see... to get it back to the islands I'll carry it on the plane in a nice gig bag and stuff things that might make my suitcase too heavy in the guitar's hard shell case. Gonna leave my sound reinforcin' gear in Fremont and my very ornately inlayed Johnson guitar with Uncle Mike. I put medium gauge strings on dat buggah and tuned it down a full step so when you play an open G chord, its actually an F chord. E = D... etc. Now my Johnson sounds like it cost 4 times as much. Way cool, schwing! If you do something like that, ya might have to have the neck slightly adjusted or even the nut filed. I was told that the nut on a guitar bought with LIGHT gauge strings will accommodate a MEDIUM gauge. I think its a good idea to tune down at least a half step due to the extra tension imposed with a larger gauge string. All my guitars and music gear live mildew-free in a secure, air-conditioned storage unit halfway between Waikiki and home. Convenient in case I forget something while out on the road, but very, very expensive... ugh!
